Common Terms in Container Shipping

(FULL CONTAINER LOAD) FCL: The term full container is used when the container is filled with the goods of one shipper. It does not matter whether the shipper has filled the entire container or half of it is empty, but FCL means that the container only contains the goods of one owner of the goods.
(LESS THAN A CONTAINER LOAD) LCL: The term less than a full container is used when a container is filled with the goods of several owners of the goods. This method of loading is usually carried out by the carrier and occurs when the cargo of several owners of goods is not enough to fill a container and the carrier places the goods of several people in one container in order to make optimal use of the loading space.
(CONTAINER FREICHT STATION) CFS or container station: A container station is a place in the port where goods are loaded into or unloaded from a container. There are facilities at the container station to store goods before loading or after unloading. The term CFS is also seen in bills of lading where the goods are registered as LCL. Because the goods must be delivered to the carrier at the station, so that the carrier can load them into containers in a combined manner.
(CONTAINER YARD) CY or container yard: It is an area in the port where the carrier receives loaded containers from the exporter to load them onto the ship or delivers the containers to the importer after unloading from the ship.
FCL/LCL: This term is used when the shipper loads goods to be delivered to several different recipients in one country into a single container. Such cargo must be separated in the destination country and each recipient's cargo is delivered to him.
LCL/FCL: This term is used when the cargo of several different shippers is unloaded at a container station and loaded into a container and delivered to a recipient.
FCL/FCL: This term is used when the entire cargo loaded into a container is sent from one shipper to one recipient.
(FREE IN AND OUT) FIO: This term is used when the shipper or recipient of the goods pays the cost of loading in the country of origin and unloading in the country of destination in addition to the cost of transporting the goods in the container.
TRANSHIPMEMT: This word, which means change of means of transport, is often used to change the carrier ship midway.
